Wilhelm Fritzel, Pastoral Landscape With Birch Trees

Wilhelm Fritzel, Pastoral Landscape With Birch Trees

A birch tree contorts through the vertical, stretching into daubs of Autumnal hues. Summer’s passed, there’s a static chill in the air - the shadows are long. On the right, a shepherd guides his flock with one straggler yards behind the rest. Ahead of them, a wide expanse of pasture towards a partially tree-lined horizon.

This absorbing view by German artist, Wilhelm Fritzel (1870-1943), captures a slice of nature’s beauty with an array of impressionistic marks. Brown meets green as the seasons change - a bright blue sky emphasising the dappled silver.

The painting is housed within a period frame and signed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
