This enchanting 19th-century landscape by Danish artist, Peter Ølsted (1824-1887) evokes the romance of an endless view under an extraordinary sky. The scenery ebbs and flows with a lyrical rhythm, the elements spiritually connected. It’s nature’s poetry, a majestic sunset across a coastal horizon. Ølsted was a master of serenity - his landscapes are quiet, blissful, and still.
In the foreground, two gateposts stand on either side of a winding track. These are an interesting inclusion as they draw us closer to the scenery. It’s easy to imagine stepping through them. The distant mansion is also perfectly positioned to capture the imagination - note the open view in the middle ground across a sunlit field.
Ølsted remains a popular artist with royalty and this painting was previously owned by Prince George Valdemar of Denmark (1920-1986) and Lady Elizabeth Shakerley (1941-2020), a first cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II.
