The Recital

This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Louise Parker (b. 1872) depicts a young lady singing while another plays the piano. It’s probably the artist’s sisters.

(Mary) Louise Parker was predominantly known for idyllic domestic genre scenes. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she spent most of her life in London living with her family. She was surrounded by creatives - her father and two of her brothers were writers, her older sister, Winifred, was a professional singer, and her younger sister, Ethel, became a music teacher.

Little is known about her artistic career aside from two of her works, ‘Thoughts’ and ‘A Daughter of Toil’ being shown at the Royal Society of British Artists.

Her sister, Winifred Parker, was a highly-rated soprano.

Signed/dated lower right and held within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
