This rhythmical seascape by Swedish artist Emil Ekman (1880-1951) depicts a static fishing boat under a majestic sky. In near-darkness, with the morning breaking, they begin their daily ritual.
Ekman’s spirited portrayal seeks to capture more than the event itself. With expression, gesture and free-flowing brushwork, he imbues the scene with a sense of poetry. It’s early and the boat is at one with nature, its furled sail penetrates the sky. The nets are dropped, an age-old tradition, as another day unfolds off the Swedish coast.
Can you imagine the artist sketching this as he looked across from a nearby sailboat? Moving with the undulation of the waves as he rested his sketchbook on one knee.
Ekman often painted marine scenes - he loved the ocean and admired those that relied upon it.
Due to its size, it’s only available for UK delivery.
