A Mother & Children Within An Interior

This beautiful mid-19th-century watercolour by British artist William Drummond (act.1800-1860) depicts a mother and her children within an interior. One of her sons feeds the family parrot, while another leans on a portfolio.

William Drummond was an accomplished portraitist who fulfilled a burgeoning need amongst the middle and upper classes to have one’s likeness depicted as a symbol of power and prestige. His skill as a draughtsman brought much acclaim.

Parrots were a popular addition to many Victorian homes and celebrated for their repertoire and longevity.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
