Vilhelm Holmgren, The Artist’s Wife

Vilhelm Holmgren, The Artist’s Wife

A colourful Summertime scene depicting the artist’s wife sunbathing by Vilhelm Holmgren (1863-1943). It’s a beautifully captured candid moment - full of effortless joy.

We love the way Holmgren has rendered the dappled shadows on Jeanne’s legs as the light passes through the branches. The short broken marks are reminiscent of the French impressionists.

It’s interesting to consider whether Holmgren painted some of this outside while enjoying a relaxed day out. Perhaps he was also naked… Food for thought.

Holmgren also produced a formal portrait of Jeanne in 1902.

The painting is signed in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
