This expressive landscape painting by Danish artist Stefan Viggo Pedersen (1891-1965) was produced during the early part of his career and has an interesting context.
The view is from Kalsberg, his childhood home, a popular meeting place for several artists. His father was Viggo Pedersen (1854-1926), an accomplished landscape painter.
You can imagine Stefan producing this work outside, painting quickly to capture the overcast sky and patches of intermittent light. Note the dry grass on the right, illuminated through the clouds. I wonder who sat alongside him?
In the middle ground, the trees are primarily dark green marks, with the foremost quite jagged in its rendering. A pond reflects from beyond them.
Pedersen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and is primarily known for his frescoes, which adorn several Danish churches.
