This late 19th-century British portrait study depicts a lady wearing a black hat with a veil. It’s an intriguing little mystery.

With an enigmatic expression, she peers back across the decades - captured in pencil and watercolour over a century ago. Given the dark veil, she’s possibly in mourning, her gentle eyes alluding to a story. Yet her dress appears more colourful, so it’s not entirely obvious.

The work is unsigned but it’s most probably a study, perhaps by an amateur artist rather than a student. There’s a sensitivity, which suggests they know each other.

What can you see in her eyes?

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
