Late 19th-Century Austrian School

Portrait Of Two Girls

This charming late 19th-century Austrian School oil painting depicts two blonde girls, probably sisters.

With porcelain skin and striking blue eyes, the details are rendered exquisitely. Their demure features sensitively portrayed by an artist of the highest merit. It’s possibly the artist’s daughters.

The work is monogrammed in the lower right, perhaps B U, or J U, but we’ve been unable to track down its creator. They undoubtedly trained at a leading Academy, perhaps in Vienna, and honed their skills by studying the masters. It takes an accomplished hand to capture both a likeness and a sense of spirit.

Monogrammed/dated in the lower right and held within a splendid pierced gilt frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 24½” x 19” / 63cm x 49cm
Year of creation: 1897
Condition: Artwork presents well. Two patched repairs. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
