This beautiful early 20th-century oil painting by British artist John Arthur Dees (1875-1959) depicts an evening landscape with a stream, trees and distant view.
Under the lazy glow of a setting sun, swirling tones bring rhythm to abundant foliage. In the foreground, grasses flicker akin to fire sprites. While three trees embrace like kindred spirits. Note, too, the pond with its misty colouring and gentle reflections.
John Arthur Dees was a northern artist who exhibited primarily in Northumberland and Durham. His finest works carry an atmospheric dreamlike charm and this is a good example of his talent.
