This beautiful early 20th-century oil painting by British artist James Herbert Snell (1861-1935) depicts a picturesque view on the River Medway in Kent.
Amid the light breeze of mid-summer, the river shimmers. Passing clouds and ample foliage reflecting in hazy tints. Beyond, the horizon is a mere sliver - a suggestion of form. While nearby flora is a cornucopia of impressionistic dabs and dashes. Nature enlivened by the sanctity of light.
Snell was a fascinating artist as his works span a transitional period for British art. As a young man, he would’ve been influenced by the impressionists, yet also retained a sense of British naturalism. As such, many of his paintings draw on both schools, with his later works, such as this, becoming more impressionistic. Kent was a popular haunt for its broad skies and enchanting river views. His wife, Emmeline, had family there.
