Hjalmar Kragh-Pedersen

Sydhavn

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Hjalmar Kragh-Pedersen (1883-1962) depicts the industrial area of Sydhavn, Denmark.

Hjalmar Kragh-Pedersen was predominantly known for his expressive oil paintings depicting industrial scenes, such as this, but he also produced townscapes and figurative work. Hailing from Copenhagen, he exhibited with the Danish Colourists (Koloristerne) for 30 years.

The sturdy application of paint echoes the gritty landscape.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
