Extensive Black Forest Landscape With Farm

This breathtaking landscape painting by Dutch artist Eliza Agnetus Emilius Nijhoff (1826-1903) depicts an extensive view in the Black Forest.

It’s exquisitely rendered and created by an artist with a deep connection to the natural world.

In the foreground, a family works by a ramshackle farmhouse while several cows wander along a track. A lone goat looks curiously towards a hill. Beyond them, an abundance of majestic pines - a dense wall of light blue under a picture-perfect sky.

This masterful composition gives you room to breathe. You could walk towards the stream, along the opening by the copse on the left, rest endlessly to the sound of very little.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a handsome swept frame with pierced corners and centres.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
