Canal View With Cottage & Bridge

This vivid 20th-century Dutch School oil painting depicts a canalside view in the low countries.

Moored alongside two rustic dwellings, a brightly-coloured river barge rests. Beyond it, the spire of a distant church. With impressionistic daubs, each element of this eclectic canal is rendered with spirit.

Perhaps the artist is sitting upon their own barge, painting quickly to capture the fleeting effects of the Summer sun.

Signed illegibly in the lower right and held within a 20th-century Rococo revival frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 12½” x 10½” / 32cm x 27cm
Year of creation: c. 1940
Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
