Circle Of George Smith Of Chichester, Village Scene With Cottages

Circle Of George Smith Of Chichester, Village Scene With Cottages

This charming late 18th-century oil painting depicts a picturesque English village under a typically cloudy sky. On the left, we see several cottages and perhaps an oast house or circular barn. In the nearest cottage, a young man leans on a stable door while a woman waits outside.

While on the right, a gentleman chats to a weary friend who’s resting under an old tree. It appears he’s carrying a gun over his shoulder, perhaps heading into the woods to shoot.

The artist probably worked in the circle of George Smith (1713/14-1776) who was in turn influenced by 17th-century Dutch and French paintings. This particular piece has its roots in the Dutch tradition more than the French.

The painting is inscribed and housed within a period frame.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 26½” x 22½” / 67cm x 57cm
Year of creation: c. 1770

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
