Late 19th-Century Academic Study

This late 19th-century drawing by C. S. Rundquist depicts the lips and nose of a classical statue.

It’s fascinating to discover academic studies by relatively unknown artists as they provide a window into a period of training without context. The most accomplished works leave a sense of bewilderment at why the artist became lost to history.

This piece, with its sensuous lips, and careful shading, carries a degree of quality. Yet Rundquist dropped off the map. Further research has uncovered several studies from between 1877-1880 and it’s likely they attended the Academy in Stockholm.

Unusually alluring and equally mystifying.

Signed lower left and held within a contemporary frame.

Medium: Pencil on paper
Overall size: 14½” x 15½” / 37cm x 40cm
Year of creation: c. 1880
Condition: Artwork presents well. Minor discolouration.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
