Bernard de Hoog, Still Life With Roses

Bernard de Hoog, Still Life With Roses

This delicate early 20th-century still life by Dutch artist Bernard de Hoog (1867-1943) depicts two roses within a glass vase. This charming little piece displays De Hoog’s mastery of light.

The complex curls of petals are confidently rendered with fairly broad brushstrokes, which bring life and character. He probably worked quickly with signs of De Hoog’s thinking visible through pentimento, the presence of earlier ideas. The vase (perhaps a creamer) is particularly well done. Note the stalks as they appear through the partially opaque glass.

In around 1935, the painting was in the collection of notable Dutch dealer, Kunsthandel H. Bos “De Poort” of The Hague (catalogue number 4896). De Hoog is represented at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Signed/dated in the lower right and held in a fine rococo revival gilt frame.
