This late 19th-century oil painting by Danish artist Axel Schovelin (1827-1893) depicts a picturesque coastal view with a cottage and fisherman.
As a wisp of smoke rises from the cottage chimney, she waits for the day’s catch. Eagerly observing her partner dragging the nets. Their cottage is nestled into a clutch of tall birch trees, it’s a romanticised vision of quaint rural bliss.
Schovelin adorned the natural world, capturing sublime views of his homeland with a particular emphasis on forests and coastlines. Here, he’s opted for a classical composition which emphasises the radiant sky.
A fine example of his remarkable skill.
