Alexander Rau, Interior Scene With Woman Sewing

Alexander Rau, Interior Scene With Woman Sewing

This gentle early 20th-century interior scene by Alexander Rau (1878-1944) depicts a young lady sewing within a farmhouse interior. It carries a relaxing mood and celebrates the joys of rustic simplicity.

The lady appears to be sitting at a kitchen table, which has an open drawer. While behind her, several religious paintings are hung against the wall. Perhaps she’s appreciating a brief moment of calm during a busy day with the family.

Little is known about Rau but he often painted scenes depicting everyday moments from rural life.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
