City View

This charming mid-19th-century oil painting by Dutch artist Alexander Joseph Daiwaille (1818-1888) depicts a city view with rustic timber-framed buildings.

Skilfully composed, two clear lines of sight provide both depth and historic interest. With the prominent homes in the foreground rendered with architectural precision. A merchant sells their produce at a covered stand by the canal while the streets are peppered with figures.

Daiwaille produced this piece in 1851 when living in Brussels so it’s possibly a view from within that city but it could equally be the Netherlands or Germany. He was inspired by the old masters and predominantly known for epic vistas in the romantic taste - with this a rare example of his city scenes. One can imagine that, given his interest in older works, he also appreciated the character and rugged appeal of this remarkable locality. He loved it here.

Monogrammed/dated lower right and held within a splendid gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
