Portrait Of A Mother & Child

This 19th-century provincial portrait depicts a mother and child sitting within a country house interior.

It’s an interesting piece with various symbolic references. Note the toy horse - a likely reminder that the boy is the next in line to inherit the estate. While the wall hanging on the right is probably testimony to the long-established family history. A church is also a conspicuous inclusion.

The painting dates to around 1860, which is evidenced by the floral bonnet sitting back on the head and the style of dress.

This charming family portrait would make the perfect centrepiece for the right room - particularly if you’re aiming for a country house look.

The painting is housed within a decorative later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
