River Landscape With Cottage

This charming 19th-century Danish School oil painting depicts a winding river view with a timber-framed cottage.

Nestled into dense woodland stands a rustic dweling with an ailing thatch, decrepit chimneys and a creaking barn door. An ancient tree towers above it, leaning across a bend in the mossy river. The inhabitants live off the land and use a small boat to navigate the waterway. Life is arduous despite their picturesque surroundings.

During the mid to late 19th century, Danish artists sought to abandon the overblown romantic emphasis of the previous decades in favour of highlighting the realities of those who lived in rural settings. Thus creating a poignant juxtaposition of hardship and abundant natural beauty.

Held within a period gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
