19th-Century British School River Landscape With Fisherman

19th-Century British School River Landscape With Fisherman

This fine 19th-century landscape painting depicts an extensive river landscape with distant hills and fisherman. The focus of the composition is a gentle waterway with its carefully rendered reflections of riverbank foliage. It’s late Summer - the trees turning to Autumnal hues.

A lone fisherman awaits a bite, perhaps it’s a favourite spot. While on the left, a second figure passes along a worn rural track towards woodland.

Beyond them, the clouds advance over distant hills, the value skilfully graduated until near white.

The painting is housed within an impressive scroll and foliate gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
