17th-Century Spanish School Angel With Harp

17th-Century Spanish School Angel With Harp

A highly decorative 17th-century oil on panel depicting an angel with a harp. This enigmatic little piece carries the weight of its 350 year history and it bears the marks of many owners.

It’s plausible that originally it was created as a piece for private worship and perhaps once hung in a small building occupied by a devout family.

The painting is fixed into a handmade frame, which is probably from the period.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 9” x 9½” / 23cm x 24cm
Year of creation: c. 1650
Provenance: Spain
Condition: Various paint losses but the paint layer has been stabilised, old wormholes, darkening.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
