Lilo Peters early career would've been particularly challenging as it began in earnest during World War II. Her first exhibition took place in 1944 - the same year that she lost her husband to the French Resistance.
So while becoming a professional artist, she also had to raise four children single-handed with the backdrop of a nation devastated by allied bombing. Her strength of character led to her travelling to many parts of the World including Lapland, Egypt, Morocco, Nepal, Mexico, Guatemala and the United States. Although her home remained in North Germany by the sea until her death in 2001.
