This 17th-century German oil painting depicts the Ettal Madonna, a statue located in Ettal Abbey, Bavaria. It’s adorned with various jewels as per its appearance in the Baroque period.

Story

Imagine, if you will, you’re an artist working in Bavaria during the 17th century. For hundreds of years, visitors have flocked to the nearby Ettal Abbey to stand before an impressive white marble statue of the Madonna and Child. Over time, the statue has acquired various precious artefacts including two crowns and elaborate jewellery. It’s deeply emotional for those who witness it and many seek to acquire an image of this miracle for their own home.

Alongside other artists, you also visit the site to draw from life and produce small oil paintings for private worship. This is a good example of one such work.

Context

The Ettal Madonna was derived from a holy image presented to Emperor Ludwig IV during his time in Rome. An angel commissioned him to construct Ettal Abbey, which was founded in 1330, and the statue remains a draw for pilgrims throughout the world.

The addition of jewels occurred during the 17th century and the crowns depicted here are identical to those shown on an engraving from 1659.
