This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Michael Therkildsen (1850-1925) depicts a rural landscape with a standing bull, resting cattle, chickens and thatched buildings. It’s skillfully rendered and demonstrates the artist’s keen understanding of anatomy. The cottage in the upper right, which is nestled into trees, is also a charming addition.

Hans Michael Therkildsen was an accomplished Danish painter of landscapes, rural scenes, interiors and animals. He trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later under Laurits Tuxen and Frans Schwartz at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler. His works are held in numerous public collections.

Monogrammed in the lower left and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
