This late 19th-century oil painting by French artist Camille Magnus (1853-1894) depicts a picturesque forest landscape with cattle taking water at a pond. Towering birch trees guide the eye towards a distant wandering figure.

Camille Magnus (Camille Magnus Deutz) was a proficient painter of landscapes, particularly views in the forest of Fontainebleau. He trained under Narcisse Díaz de la Peña and his works were shown at the Paris Salon.

Note the confidently applied reflections in the pond and the masterful handling of the leaves.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
