This fine mid-19th-century Dutch oil painting depicts a gentle view with a windmill, inn, horseback rider and figures.

As the sun sets, illuminating the sky with a golden glow, a weary family dismounts to take rest and refreshments at a quaint rural inn. A figure, perhaps the landlady, greets them by a stable door.

The exquisite rendering of this idyllic setting is steeped in the rich heritage of the low countries. Numerous Dutch artists in the 19th century looked back to the 17th century for inspiration - proud of their forebears and keen to maintain a sense of national identity. Large skies, winding rivers and flat expansive views were embedded in their DNA.

It’s a little reminiscent of works by Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler (1837-1894) and Hermanus Koekkoek (13 March 1815-1882).

Held within a good later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
