This late 19th-century watercolour by British artist Martha Fowler (b.1843) depicts a view on the Cornish coast.

Fisherfolk carry nets amid a haze of dense fog. Meandering between pools of water left by the retreating tide. Beyond, the craggy stone cliffs are nearly imperceptible, their imposing presence quietly receding. Perhaps it’s morning, an early start for these local Cornish workers.

Martha Fowler treasured the coast. Hailing from Southampton, she spent seven decades in her home town before moving to picturesque Shaftesbury in Dorset. Here we see her aptitude for gentle variations of tone. Mastering fog is a challenging endeavour.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
