This fine portrait by British artist William Moore (1790-1851) depicts a young man holding a book. He’s wearing a white shirt, black necktie, waistcoat and unbuttoned frock coat.

During the 1830s, the frock coat tended to be worn for informal occasions during the day with the tailcoat a better option for evening functions. This young gentleman is probably a scholar - supported by a proud family.

William Moore was a notable artist and the father of Albert Moore (1841-1893). He’s best known for his depiction of Charles Dickens and also referred to as William Moore of York or William Moore Senior.
