View From The Cliffs At Lønstrup Beach

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Niels Frederik Schiøttz-Jensen (1855-1941) depicts a picturesque view of Lønstrup Beach, Jutland.

From our viewpoint atop the cliffs, the beach is peppered with distant signs of life. Four bathing machines with wheels pushed into damp sand stand idle. While several figures, perhaps fishermen, gather alongside sailboats.

Schiøttz-Jensen adored Lønstrup and painted here often between 1900 and 1920. In 1902, he took his easel onto the beach itself and again in 1909. But here, he's captured an interesting elevated perspective.

He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later in Paris at the Académie Colarossi. His works were widely exhibited during his lifetime and he was awarded the Academy Art Prize twice along with the first class annual medal in 1895.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
