Viola Carte, Portrait Of A Gentleman

Viola Carte, Portrait Of A Gentleman

This intriguing early 20th-century portrait by British artist, Viola Carte (1848-1926) depicts a thoughtful gentleman resting his head upon his palm. Perhaps morose, he’s deep in contemplation. A gent with a wandering mind, discontented and forlorn. Wistful and dramatic.

Carte hailed from a theatrical background as her older brother was the famous impresario, Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901). She moved in celebrity circles so could this young man be an aspiring actor? A portrait to showcase a mood?

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
