Jan Hendrick Neuman, Portrait Of A Woman

Jan Hendrick Neuman, Portrait Of A Woman

A fine late 19th-century portrait of a lady by Dutch painter, Jan Hendrick Neuman (1819-1898). The details here are exquisite and typical of Neuman’s fastidious approach to minutiae.

Neuman was born in Cologne, Germany, but soon moved to the Netherlands to study at the Royal Academy Of Art in Amsterdam. He’s primarily known as a portraitist but also painted genre scenes and miniatures.

He exhibited widely during his lifetime and today he’s represented at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. His daughter, Clasina Carolina Frederika Neuman (1851–1908), also became a painter.

The portrait is signed/dated on the left and housed within a period gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
