19th-Century Portrait Of A Lady With A Bonnet

19th-Century Portrait Of A Lady With A Bonnet

A charming mid-19th-century portrait of a lady wearing a bonnet decorated with small flowers. How do you read her expression? A touch of concern? Some shyness?

Her outfit matches the fashion of the 1860s when bell-shaped dresses featured low sloping shoulders that flared out into broad sleeves.

The painting is housed within a period swept frame that could be its original.

Medium: Oil on canvas laid on panel
Overall size: 12½” x 13½” / 32cm x 35cm
Year of creation: c. 1860
Provenance: Germany
Condition: A few light scuffs here and there. Two small white marks towards the top, which could be either paint or the ground showing through due to minor paint loss. Frame with some general age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
