William Moore

Portrait Of A Boy & Dog

This fine portrait by British artist William Moore (1790-1851) depicts a young man and his treasured puppy. He’s holding a feather to distract the young pup while Moore captures their image.

His outfit dates to the 1830s and he appears to be wearing a tailcoat, white shirt, black necktie, waistcoat and white trousers. A hat with a light blue ribbon rests on his left.

William Moore was a notable artist and the father of Albert Moore (1841-1893). He’s best known for his depiction of Charles Dickens and also referred to as William Moore of York or William Moore Senior.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
