Frederik Rohde trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and remains highly regarded for his exquisite landscapes. There’s a chance that this particular piece was created during a trip to Italy in the 1860s. The architecture and scenery are reminiscent of his other works from this period.
Rohde is also known for training the great Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) during the early part of his life.
