Piet Rackwitsz was born in Rotterdam, Holland, and spent many years working in The Hague. He was self-taught and predominantly known as a landscape painter.

Later in life, he travelled through America (Boston, New York, Hollywood and Pasadena) before becoming the co-founder of the Hollywood Art Institute.
