Sophus Vermehren, Interior Scene With Woman Knitting

Sophus Vermehren, Interior Scene With Woman Knitting

A charming late 19th-century interior scene depicting a woman knitting in a kitchen by Danish artist, Sophus Vermehren (1866-1950).

There’s a rustic quality to this kitchen, which is emphasised further by the unusual composition and the artist’s deliberately uneven lines. Note the large stove, which juts into view and the crockery on the back shelf - left without organisation.

Vermehren was taught by his father, Frederick, who often painted interior scenes that celebrated simple moments within ordinary rural families.

The painting is signed and housed within a gilt frame.
