Interior

This early 20th-century oil painting by German artist Rudolf Dammeier (1851-1936) depicts a dark room with a chair, drop-leaf table, window, clock and exquisite wall panelling. It was produced in Berlin.

As the quiet light cascades across wooden furnishings, an old chair beckons us to rest awhile in contemplation. With the silence only broken by the perpetuity of an inset clock and the occasional creak of settling timber.

Dammeier was an accomplished artist who enjoyed the hushed interiors of historic buildings. Here, he’s selected a view which encompasses a particularly unusual decorative wall panel with three symbols. Perhaps these relate to the building’s origin.

Signed/dated in the lower right and held within its original frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
