Sunlit Interior With Lady Reading

Robert Panitzsch

Sunlit Interior With Lady Reading

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Robert Panitzsch (1879-1949) depicts a lady reading in a sunlit interior.

Panitzsch has become widely admired for his beautiful interior scenes, often depicting women either reading or undertaking handicrafts. He was particularly skilled at capturing light effects within plush interiors adorned with decorative ornaments.

This piece from the 1920s is a fine example of his talent. The open door creates additional depth as if we could step through the painting itself. A similar work sold at Sotheby's in 1997.

Note the clever reflection in the glazed portrait on the left.

Signed in the lower right and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
