A Lady Within A Baroque Interior

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Robert Panitzsch (1879-1949) depicts a lady in costume standing within a baroque interior.

Panitzsch was captivated by the splendour, craft, and majesty of 17th-century buildings. Inspired by their ornate furnishings and decorative embellishments. His passion for the past was probably amplified during his training at the Academy in Berlin where it was common for students to carefully study the old masters. Numerous works by Dutch, Flemish and Italian painters were available to view at the city’s museums.

This appreciation for interiors translated into numerous depictions of his own home, for which he’s become well known. But here in this piece from the early part of his career, he’s captured a beautiful baroque interior, complete with period furniture. This is the only example we can find of such a scene and, as such, it’s an important work.

He’s rendered it superbly. Note the reflection in the glass of the picture above the window. And the view through the window itself. Note too the fine old master painting hanging from two chains in the upper left.

Signed in the lower left and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
