A provincial 19th-century portrait of a dark brown stallion known as Alonzo. Tucked into the frame, a short poem reads as follows:
It is Alonzo that is coming,
You can tell him by his walk;
He is the Horse that trots so fast
And makes the people talk;
Look at his feet and legs,
Look at his size and length;
At his superior action,
His breeding and his strength.
The painting is housed within a beautiful gilded frame with foliate borders and swept corners.
Dated in the lower right and signed ‘Alonzo’.
