This impressionistic late 19th-century oil painting by Norwegian artist Ole Juul (1852-1927) depicts an evening view with river and buildings.
As the river shimmers with an atmospheric golden glow, the artist works quickly to capture the effects. Cleverly breaking the view down into vertical layers, each with distinct characteristics. There’s a quiet mood, introspective and tranquil. With interest added in the form of a puffing steamboat.
Juul was a talented artist who trained in Düsseldorf, Germany. His works are often peppered with details rendered in loose, yet considered, marks.
