This late 19th-century oil painting by Danish artist Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) depicts a picturesque Summer landscape.
Here, we see the monumental presence of nature towering over two children as they stroll along a well-trod rural track. The trees appear as behemoths caught by a strong channel of enchanting light. While beyond, the compact foliage huddles in gentle tints.
Hansen was a master at capturing the majesty of nature in all its abundant glory. Training first at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he later became an accomplished photographer, before returning to painting in his autumn years. He produced this splendid piece in 1891 and utilised his deep understanding of composition to emphasise the expansive view.
