Moorland Landscape With Pond

This late 19th-century oil painting by versatile German artist Moritz Eduard Lotze (1809-90) depicts a moorland view with shimmering pond.

As the sun sets over a rugged moor, golden embers drift beyond a distant horizon. The sky, a graduated hush of evening tints, punctuated by a scattering of passing clouds.

In the middle-ground, darkness - the scenery obscured in shadow. While, on the right, rising before an orange glow, four trees emerge in silhouette.

Lotze was 67 when he produced this peaceful work - tired, experienced, and wiser. He’d spent decades perfecting the art of photography, working on several Italian commissions, but now sought the calm of twilight in oils.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
