Max Märtens, Alpine Landscape With Fir Trees

Max Märtens, Alpine Landscape With Fir Trees

This breathtaking landscape painting by German artist Max Märtens (1887-1970) depicts an extensive mountain view within the Austrian Alps. It’s meticulously rendered and captures the dramatic peaks in all their splendour.

Bathed in brilliant light, this snow-covered vista is a sight to behold. A deep furrow twists its way downhill towards several fir trees - strong verticals that emerge from undulant white scenery. While ahead of them, the rocky precipice of the highest peak towers over the horizon. Majestically climbing with awe-inspiring beauty.

As a keen mountaineer, Märtens often painted the Alps, particularly during the 1920s and 30s.

Signed in the lower right and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
