Portrait of a Valencian Woman

This early 20th-century oil painting by Spanish artist José Genovés Llansol (1850-1930) depicts a seated woman from Valencia.

Llansol sought to capture the sights, sounds and flamboyance of a City he adored. Rich tones dominate his sun-drenched depictions of villagers on dusty backstreets. While his still lifes are abundant with painterly energy.

Here, we see a seated woman, dressed in traditional clothing, during a moment of quiet contemplation. Deep in thought, she’s plaiting her hair with muscular hands that indicate labour. At first glance appearing calm but with a dormant fire smouldering under the surface.

Signed and held within a 20th-century gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
