Landscape With Lake

This beautiful late 19th-century oil painting by Danish artist Johannes Boesen (1847-1916) depicts a rural view with lake and distant hills. Boesen was taught by a master of Danish Golden Age landscapes, P. C. Skovgaard (1817-1875), and his influence is clear to see.

The composition here is adroitly captured with the hills intersecting to create a pathway for the eye. Note how the foliage guides you downhill and out towards the lake. With an area of verdant pasture breaking the earthy tones of the heath. Do you see the sheep grazing? And note the light on the water.

The view is distinctly similar to another piece by Boesen depicting Jutland in Denmark.

Boesen was highly regarded during his lifetime and won numerous awards. He trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
