Jo Strahn, Rural Scene With Farmers & Cattle

Jo Strahn, Rural Scene With Farmers & Cattle

A charming mid-century scene depicting three farmers, a horse and cart with hay, a flock of sheep, and two goats. The artist, Peter Josef Strahn (1904-1997) enjoyed capturing these everyday rural moments and this is typical of his style.

There’s a real joy in this painting and you can see how much Strahn treasured working outdoors. He was known to be a quiet man - an "artist of silence" - and his work reflected his persona.

Strahn trained at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and later founded his own painting school.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a frame that’s probably its original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
